What this tool does
ECB reference data: Convert an amount between major currencies using the latest available reference rate or a selected year-end reference rate.
How to use it
- Choose Latest or one of the available year-end reference years.
- Enter an amount and select the source and target currencies.
- Convert, then review the rate date and data source before relying on the estimate.
Formula and method
Reference rates share a common euro base. The tool divides the amount by the source-currency rate and multiplies it by the target-currency rate. Historical choices use the last available reference rate for the selected year.
Worked example
If the reference table shows EUR 1 = USD 1.10, USD 110 converts to about EUR 100 before bank spreads or fees.
Common uses
- Estimating a travel or purchase budget
- Comparing values at recent year-end reference dates
- Checking an approximate cross-currency value
Limitations
Reference rates are not transaction quotes. Banks, cards and cash providers add spreads and fees, and rates may be delayed on weekends or holidays. Confirm the final amount with the provider processing the payment.
