What this tool does

Convert a completed distance and elapsed time into pace per kilometre, pace per mile and average speed.

How to use it

  1. Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the total elapsed hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Calculate and compare both pace units with average kilometres per hour.

Formula and method

Total time is converted to seconds and distance to kilometres. Pace equals total seconds divided by distance; mile pace uses the kilometre-to-mile conversion. Average speed equals distance in kilometres divided by elapsed hours.

Worked example

Running 10 km in 50 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per km, about 8:03 per mile and an average speed of 12 km/h.

Common uses

  • Reviewing a race or training session
  • Converting a target pace between km and miles
  • Estimating the speed required for a distance goal

Limitations

This is arithmetic based on total elapsed time. GPS error, pauses, elevation, surface, weather and split variation are not adjusted, and the result is not a training or medical recommendation.

FAQ

Should I enter moving time or elapsed time?

Use the time that matches your purpose. Official race pace normally uses elapsed time, while a training review may use moving time.

Why do individual splits differ from the average?

The calculator divides total time evenly across the full distance; real kilometres or miles may be faster or slower.
