What this tool does

Plan a rectangular material layer with one transparent volume formula instead of creating separate copies for every material name.

How to use it

  1. Enter the rectangular length, width and layer depth.
  2. Add a waste allowance and optional bag volume.
  3. Review area, base volume, required volume and rounded-up bag count.

Formula and method

Base volume = length × width × depth in metres. Required volume = base volume × (1 + waste rate); litres = cubic metres × 1,000 and bags round up by entered litres per bag.

Example

A 4×3 m area at 5 cm depth is 0.6 m³. With 10% allowance it needs 0.66 m³ or 660 L, equal to 27 bags of 25 L.

Useful for

  • Planning garden soil or mulch
  • Estimating loose gravel volume
  • Checking bag quantities from supplier coverage

Limits and notes

Settling, compaction, irregular shapes, slopes, moisture, density and supplier fill tolerances are excluded. Concrete structures require engineering, mix and safety guidance beyond this volume estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for weight?

No. Weight requires a material-specific bulk density that varies with moisture and compaction.

Why are bags rounded up?

A partial bag is usually unavailable, so the count covers the entered volume and allowance.
