What this tool does
Reduce width and height to a ratio such as 16:9 and project a new size without stretching the image.
How to use it
- Enter the original width and height in pixels.
- Optionally enter a target width.
- Review the simplified ratio and matching target height.
Formula and method
Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor. Target height = target width × original height ÷ original width.
Example
1920×1080 simplifies to 16:9. At 1280px wide, the matching height is 720px.
Useful for
- Planning video thumbnails
- Resizing images proportionally
- Comparing display formats
Limits and notes
The calculation assumes square pixels. Cropping, padding, non-square video pixels and platform minimum sizes are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the target height a decimal?
Round to the nearest whole pixel and check the small ratio difference in the final asset.
Does this crop the image?
No. It only calculates dimensions that preserve the original ratio.
