Formula and method

Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction. Addition and subtraction use a common denominator; division uses the reciprocal. Reduce the result by the greatest common divisor.

Worked example

1 1/2 + 2/3 = 3/2 + 2/3 = 9/6 + 4/6 = 13/6 = 2 1/6. The decimal approximation is 2.16666666667.
