What this tool does

This GPA calculator finds a credit-weighted grade point average from the grade points and credits entered for each course. It also shows total credits and quality points, helping students check a term or compare planning scenarios without uploading academic records.

How to use it

  1. Add one row for every course included in the calculation.
  2. Enter the numeric grade points assigned by your school and the positive credit value for each course.
  3. Calculate, then compare the displayed GPA, total credits, and quality points with your institution’s rules before making an academic decision.

Calculation method

Quality points for a course = grade points × course credits. Total quality points are divided by total attempted credits: weighted GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Courses with more credits therefore affect the result more strongly.

Worked example

Three courses have 4.0 points for 3 credits, 3.0 points for 3 credits, and 2.0 points for 2 credits. Their quality points are 12, 9, and 4. The total is 25 quality points across 8 credits, so the weighted GPA is 25 ÷ 8 = 3.125.

Common uses

  • Checking a semester GPA before grades are finalized
  • Testing how a planned course result could change a weighted average
  • Verifying quality points and attempted-credit totals

Limitations

Schools may use 4.0, 4.3, 5.0, plus/minus, honors, or other scales. Repeated courses, pass/fail work, withdrawals, transfer credits, and institutional rounding can also be handled differently. Enter the numeric points used by your own school; this tool accepts values from 0 through 5 but does not decide which scale or policy applies. The registrar’s official calculation controls.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a cumulative GPA?

Only if every course and credit that your institution includes in the cumulative calculation is entered using its official grade-point rules.

Does an A always equal 4.0?

No. Grade-point values and weighting policies vary. Use the value shown in your school’s catalog, transcript guide, or registrar policy.
