What this tool does
This counter analyzes text as you type and reports characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading and speaking time.
How to use it
- Paste or type the complete text in the box.
- Review the live totals and the two time estimates.
- Edit the text to compare versions, or clear the box to start again.
Method
Characters include every typed symbol; the no-spaces total removes whitespace. Words are groups of letters or numbers, sentences are separated by common sentence-ending punctuation, and blank lines separate paragraphs. Reading time is rounded up at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130 words per minute.
Worked example
A 650-word article is shown as about 4 reading minutes and 5 speaking minutes. Removing a heading immediately updates every count without sending the draft to a server.
Common uses
- Checking assignment or article length
- Preparing a speech, video script, or presentation
- Comparing drafts before publishing
Limitations
Word boundaries differ between languages and editorial systems. Hyphenated terms, abbreviations, emoji, source code, and languages that do not normally use spaces may be counted differently from a publisher or school platform.
FAQ
Does the tool save my text?
No. The analysis runs in the current browser page, and the tool does not create an account or store the text.
Why is my word count different elsewhere?
Other editors may apply different rules to hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, or scripts without spaces. Use one counter consistently for a final limit.
